Ski hire Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Located in Bavaria near the Austrian border and connected to Munich with rail and motorway links, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is one of the best ski areas in Germany, with an altitude variation of 1,350m.
One thinks immediately of winter sports whenever Garmisch-Partenkirchen is mentioned: seven months of perfect snow, 60kilomètres of pistes, perfect snowy slopes and the sole ski area in Germany on a glacier. The two formerly independent communities each possesses a superb historic centre, a magnificent landscape and a rich culture. And together they form the number one winter sports resort in Germany. Pistes at all levels of difficulty allow everyone to enjoy skiing.
The roof of Germany: the Zugspitze, the highest point in Germany at 2,962m, is a superb destination for nature-lovers, sun worshippers, hikers and skiers. Since 1995, the Zugspitze has housed a 450-m² art gallery with a superb panoramic view. Great art nearly 3,000m high: a feat almost unequalled in the world.
The region is also the meeting place for snowboarders and freeriders from across the world. With its Olympic sports infrastructure, the New Year's ski jumping championship taking place on the world's most modern ski jump, and the downhill and the super G on the Kandahar pistes, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is quite simply heaven for winter sports.
The resort hosted the fourth Olympic Winter Games in 1936 and would have received those of 1940, but they were later cancelled.
Accessible year-round, the Partnach Gorge is an experience not to be missed: each excursion in this unique geological formation is a veritable adventure in nature exploration. The King's House on Schachen, built by Ludwig II of Bavaria, is also worth a visit.
The resort has been twinned with that of Chamonix in France since 1973, and with Aspen in the United States.
